Youth cause Hope Invasion

This Easter week, young people from across York have been working together and boldly spreading a message of hope on their city streets. Haxby & Wigginton Methodist Church joined with 29 other churches to pray for and support Hope Invasion – a huge, three-week youth mission.

In the run-up to the events young people from our church gave away free cakes at Joseph Rowntree School during lunchtime . Four of our young people got involved in the Street Invasion at the start of the Easter break and many others came to the event in the park.

As a result of the mission over 100 young people aged 11-14 have registered interest in attending a Youth Alpha, one of which will be happening here in Haxby – Youth Alpha @ Aroma

WHaM team @ Heslington Cup

We had a wonderful afternoon of competitive football at the Heslington Cup yesterday afternoon.

The weather was fabulous, and the football and fellowship was excellent.

WHaM Heslington Cup - March 2012

WHaM fielded a young team, that more than exceeded expectations. Every member of the team played with enthusiasm and it is fair to say that we played well against competition from St. Pauls A & B teams, YCC, Heslingston, St Barnabus and Holy Trinity.

We may have come 7th place, but we can all say that we played our best and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

Our team consisted of Michael, Edmund, Jack, George, Matthew and Jacob.

Thanks also to the parents and adult supporters who came along to cheer the WHaM team.

Shoebox ideas

I know it’s only February, however, retailers will soon be thinking of getting rid of their winter stocks to make room for spring and summer – watch out for deals on hats, scarfs and gloves so you have them ready for later in the year.

Watch out for bargains through the year, toothpaste or soap on buy one get one free and the like. We could see who gets the best value for money filled shoebox!

SCARECROW FESTIVAL 2012

Our Scarecrow Festival Planning Team is now in place and hoping to produce the best Scarecrow Festival to-date!  Of course, this depends on the response of our local community – who haven’t let us down yet; they make and display the scarecrows – the local businesses supply us with the prizes; and we ask God for some good weather!

Making a scarecrow this year? – register here!

The Festival will be over the 5th, 6th & 7th May weekend - the trails £2.00 each (not per person!) will be on sale from 10.00am to 4.30pm on the Saturday & Monday; and from 12 noon to 4.30pm on the Sunday.  The later Sunday start gives us time to attend the All-age Family Service at 9.45am to which you are invited too!

There will the usual light meals and refreshments available at the above times: also face-painting for the children (and the young in heart!) and so we look forward to seeing you (again?).

New Church Website Launched

The new church website has been launched – with the help of a virtual bottle of champagne; may God bless her and all who sail in her – or something like that.

The old website was starting to creak a bit after more than ten years of service. Let us know what you think, and we’ll try and keep it fresh, useful and fit for purpose.

Thank you 679 shoe boxes

A huge thank you to everyone who packed a shoe box and also to everyone else who collected them in, transported or sorted them. 679 boxes are now making their way to Swaziland, via Sherburn in Elmet.

Don’t worry if you packed a warm hat, the regional representative of Operation Christmas Child came when the the boxes were collected and he confirmed that the hats are really popular in Africa.

I know that a number of groups that send their boxes to us have arranged direct collection this year so whilst our numbers hae dropped I am happy that there are as many boxes heading out as usual.

Thanks again.
