Shoebox ideas

I know it’s only February, however, retailers will soon be thinking of getting rid of their winter stocks to make room for spring and summer – watch out for deals on hats, scarfs and gloves so you have them ready for later in the year.

Watch out for bargains through the year, toothpaste or soap on buy one get one free and the like. We could see who gets the best value for money filled shoebox!

SCARECROW FESTIVAL 2012

Our Scarecrow Festival Planning Team is now in place and hoping to produce the best Scarecrow Festival to-date!  Of course, this depends on the response of our local community – who haven’t let us down yet; they make and display the scarecrows – the local businesses supply us with the prizes; and we ask God for some good weather!

The Festival will be over the 5th, 6th & 7th May weekend - the trails £2.00 each (not per person!) will be on sale from 10.00am to 4.30pm on the Saturday & Monday; and from 12 noon to 4.30pm on the Sunday.  The later Sunday start gives us time to attend the All-age Family Service at 9.45am to which you are invited too!

There will the usual light meals and refreshments available at the above times: also face-painting for the children (and the young in heart!) and so we look forward to seeing you (again?).

New Church Website Launched

The new church website has been launched – with the help of a virtual bottle of champagne; may God bless her and all who sail in her – or something like that.

The old website was starting to creak a bit after more than ten years of service. Let us know what you think, and we’ll try and keep it fresh, useful and fit for purpose.

Thank you 679 shoe boxes

A huge thank you to everyone who packed a shoe box and also to everyone else who collected them in, transported or sorted them. 679 boxes are now making their way to Swaziland, via Sherburn in Elmet.

Don’t worry if you packed a warm hat, the regional representative of Operation Christmas Child came when the the boxes were collected and he confirmed that the hats are really popular in Africa.

I know that a number of groups that send their boxes to us have arranged direct collection this year so whilst our numbers hae dropped I am happy that there are as many boxes heading out as usual.

Thanks again.

Uses for shoe boxes

What do you use your shoe box for?

Well, yes you can keep shoes in them – the name sort of gives it away – but what else do you use them for, what else do you store in them.

I would be interested in your posts – and remember each shoe box you pack to send to a child will contain hope for that child and a tangible reminder of God’s love – top that!

Revd Peter Owen-Jones

He’s been “Around the World in 80 Faiths”, he’s been an “Extreme Pilgrim” and he’s tried to lived without money in “How to live a simple life”. Now BBC TV presenter and Anglican vicar Peter Owen Jones faces his toughest assignment yet – Haxby and Wigginton Methodist Church. Ok, maybe that last bit isn’t quite true, but this well travelled and extremely engaging speaker is coming to speak in the church on Friday November 18th at 7:30pm.

Peter says “The environment is the greatest issue Christianity faces today.”

As part of his “green mission” to Britain, Owen Jones aims to raise a series of questions about Nature, and the nature of Christian love, and the manner in which Christianity is viewed from the perspective of environmental campaigning. He asks how we might move into a changed environmental future, recognising the indwelling of God in all Creation, and what that means for the future of Christianity.

Mark it in your diary and tell your friends. The tickets are on sale at £10 each (proceeds will go to charity) and you can get them from Aroma Coffee Shop or from me.
